An armoured alien sniper and a human officer in dark armour, seen from behind, stand together at a viewing rail on a vast ring-shaped space station, a planet and starships beyond.

Commander Shepard

There's no Shepard without Vakarian.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The line makes Garrus the other half of the hero: the soldier who has stood beside Shepard since the first game. It is a friendship line first, which is why it lands the same way for players who never romanced him, and it carries the grief of a goodbye as well as the joke. Fans treat it as the emotional peak of the trilogy and use it as shorthand for the partner you can't do without.

Spoilers for Mass Effect 3Show the scene

In Mass Effect 3, on Earth just before the final push on the Reapers' beam to the Citadel (the Priority: Earth mission), Shepard seeks out Garrus for what both know may be a last talk. They trade jokes about retiring somewhere warm and tropical, and Garrus promises to meet Shepard at the bar in heaven if it goes wrong. Shepard answers with this line. It is spoken by Shepard to Garrus. The wiki's account has Garrus then telling a romanced Shepard to come back alive; the charge to the beam follows.
