River Song

Hello, sweetie.

— Doctor Who ‧ 2005

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Two words that tell you River knows far more than the Doctor does. It is flirtatious, teasing and slightly condescending, and it lands as a mystery because he has never met her. Fans quote it as her signature, and it reads differently on rewatch once you know why she says it.

Spoilers for Doctor WhoShow the scene

River Song's first line to the Doctor, in "Silence in the Library" (2008). The Doctor and Donna are in a mysterious, deserted library, and the Doctor is begging a message-sending camera to stop. A team of explorers in spacesuits enters, and their leader walks up to him and greets him with "Hello, sweetie." It is the Tenth Doctor's first meeting with her, and the greeting became her signature across her later appearances.
