It's a terrible day for rain.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Mustang can't cry in front of a subordinate, so he blames the weather, and Hawkeye is kind enough to see what he means. It is the series' best-known moment of grief held in check, and it gains from the running joke that Mustang's flame alchemy is useless in the rain. Fans quote the exchange (or just 'it's raining') whenever someone is hiding tears.

Spoilers for Fullmetal Alchemist: BrotherhoodShow the scene

After Maes Hughes is murdered in episode 10 of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, "Separate Destinations" (Japanese broadcast 7 June 2009), his funeral is held, and afterwards Mustang stands at his friend's grave in tears. Talking with Lt. Hawkeye about the Elrics, he says he's fine, except that it is a terrible day for rain. Hawkeye looks at the sky and says it isn't raining, then looks at him again and sees a tear on his face; Mustang says "yes it is", and she quietly agrees. Mustang then turns to investigating Hughes's death.
