A lesson without pain is meaningless. That's because no one can gain without sacrificing something. But by enduring that pain and overcoming it, he shall obtain a powerful, unmatched heart. A fullmetal heart.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Arakawa wrote this as her own farewell to readers, and the anime hands it to Edward, so the series ends on its theme turned into a promise: pain is the price, and what you buy with it is a heart that cannot be broken. Because it is the last thing said in Brotherhood, many fans use it as the show's creed, and the phrase fullmetal heart is a common sign-off in fan tributes.
