Who are you calling so short he can't be seen with the naked eye?

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The joke is that Ed hears an insult in everything: the line is his own exaggeration of what he thinks people are saying, shouted before anyone has finished the sentence. Fans quote it because it makes a fierce, tragic hero instantly human and funny, and it became the shorthand for the whole running gag, the one every cosplayer and re-watch brings up first.

Spoilers for Fullmetal Alchemist: BrotherhoodShow the scene

The line belongs to the series' most reliable running gag: Edward Elric, the teenage State Alchemist of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009), flies into a rage whenever anyone so much as hints at his height. At 165 cm he is shorter than most people his age, and fan wikis note that his outbursts follow a pattern, taking even a casual mention of his stature as a direct insult.
