I'm just a housewife.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a disguise worn so lightly that it works as a punchline: the most dangerous person in the room insists she is nobody, right before the fight starts. Fans love the whiplash between the apron and the threat, and the line has become the standard way to sneak a far scarier answer under a modest label: what a character says when they want to be underestimated.

Spoilers for Fullmetal Alchemist: BrotherhoodShow the scene

Izumi Curtis is Edward and Alphonse Elric's alchemy teacher in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009), and she is also the wife of Dublith's butcher. By the fan wiki's account, she is proud to be a 'simple, kind housewife' and calmly introduces herself that way to anyone who asks, which is why the series gives her the alias 'A Passing Housewife' on the eyecatch of episode 12. Her quiet claim sits against a body that coughs blood, and a temper that terrifies the Elric brothers.
