Scout

Grass grows, birds fly, sun shines, and brother, I hurt people.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the Scout's whole personality in one breath: a scrawny, fast-talking Boston kid who treats violence as a law of nature, like weather. Played for laughs against a very large Heavy he is mid-brawl with, the swagger is half bluff and fully endearing. Players still reach for it when they land a lucky kill, and the 'brother, I hurt people' cadence is one of the most quoted lines in Valve's catalogue.

Spoilers for Team Fortress 2Show the scene

In Meet the Scout, the Team Fortress 2 character short Valve released on April 19, 2008, a RED Scout sprints across the Well map and ambushes a BLU Heavy who is about to eat a Sandvich near the Granary control point. As the two brawl, the Scout keeps cutting to camera to introduce himself, boasting that he is kind of a big deal. He then delivers this line, poking the lens on the last word, before braining the Heavy with his bat and claiming the point. The Scout is voiced by Nathan Vetterlein.
