On a dusty desert battlefield, a soldier in a red uniform and helmet lies in the dirt reaching up as a tall medic in a white coat, round glasses and a tube backpack stands over him with a medical beam gun.

The call of every class in Team Fortress 2 (2007)

Medic!

— Team Fortress 2 · 2007

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The whole team-based game in one syllable. Everyone in a TF2 match shouts it, each in their own accent and panic, and it is the nearest thing the game has to a shared prayer. It has outlived the game: any online shooter with a healer inherits the cry, and cosplayers, memes and teachers all shout it for laughs. The Medic himself, of course, rarely answers.

The call every Team Fortress 2 player makes dozens of times a match. In the 2007 game it is a default voice command on its own key (E), spoken in whichever class's voice you play, and it makes a red-cross speech bubble appear over the caller's head. For a Medic player, those bubbles show through walls with an on-screen arrow pointing to whoever is shouting. The 13 October 2011 Manniversary update changed the game so that a low-health or burning player with a Medic under the crosshair always calls for one, rather than asking the Medic to follow.
