Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The line is funny because it states the obvious with total sincerity. In the subtitles the wording reads as a redundant statement, a translation oddity that fans on imageboards took up around 2006 as shorthand for earnest, thick-headed shonen logic. It has outlived the show as a general-purpose reaction, used whenever someone proclaims something no one could dispute.

Spoilers for Fate/stay nightShow the scene

In the 2006 Studio Deen adaptation of Fate/stay night, the line comes in the final stretch of the Fate route. Shirou Emiya explains why he survives wounds that should have killed him: the sheath Avalon, put inside his body years before by his adoptive father Kiritsugu, heals him. Know Your Meme ties the line to episode 23, "The Holy Grail" (aired 10 June 2006), where it appears in the English fan subtitles. In that episode Shirou and Saber go to the Ryudo shrine to face Kirei Kotomine and Gilgamesh. The earliest surviving screenshot is dated 17 June 2006.
