The Ninth Doctor

Fantastic!

— Doctor Who ‧ 2005

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the Ninth Doctor's delight in everything, including the dangerous parts, compressed into three syllables. After the Time War it also hints at a man deciding to find the world wonderful again. It is plain English rather than a coinage, which made it easy to quote, and later Doctors use it as a deliberate callback.

Spoilers for Doctor WhoShow the scene

The Ninth Doctor's catchphrase, a word he uses on its own or inside a sentence. The Tardis wiki notes he says it often in "Rose" (2005), the revival's first episode. The Tenth Doctor's debut, "The Christmas Invasion" (2005), plays with it: a scene deleted before broadcast has the new Doctor unable to say it because of his "new teeth", and in the final scene he finally gets the word out.
