The Twelfth Doctor

Personally, I think that's a hell of a bird.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

After a monologue about time that dwarfs the human scale, the Doctor puts a joke at the end of it: eternity is long, but the truly impressive thing is the persistent bird. It is Peter Capaldi's grumpy-poet Doctor in one beat, patient and wry in the face of despair. Fans quote it as the capper to the episode Doctor Who Magazine readers voted the best story ever, and as shorthand for stubbornness.

Spoilers for Doctor WhoShow the scene

In "Heaven Sent" (series 9, aired 28 November 2015), the Twelfth Doctor is trapped alone in a castle that is a Time Lord torture chamber, hunted by a veiled creature. He realises that the word "bird" scratched in the dust refers to the Grimm fairy tale of the shepherd's boy, in which a bird sharpening its beak on a diamond mountain marks off a second of eternity. While punching a wall harder than diamond, he retells the story across billions of years and ends on this line. Steven Moffat wrote the episode.
