Tony Stark

I am Iron Man.

— Iron Man  ·  2008

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Five words that set the course of a franchise. Comic-book heroes hide behind secret identities; Stark, who cannot resist an audience, throws his away at the first chance. That swagger defined the tone of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which starts here, and he says the line again, with a very different weight, in Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Spoilers for Iron ManShow the scene

The last line of Iron Man (2008). Billionaire weapons maker Tony Stark has beaten Obadiah Stane in a fight above Stark Industries, and the press has been calling his armored alter ego Iron Man. At the next day's press conference, Stark publicly admits that he is that hero. Robert Downey Jr. improvised the line, and producer Kevin Feige felt it suited the character. In a post-credits scene, Nick Fury visits Stark at home to talk about a bigger universe and the Avengers Initiative.
