Tharg the Mighty

Borag Thungg, Earthlets!

— 2000 AD · 1977

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a greeting that doubles as a membership card. A British weekly comic spoke to its readers as subjects of an alien overlord, and the joke has run for nearly fifty years without Tharg ever breaking character. Hearing Borag Thungg tells a fan they are among the Earthlets, and it is the comic's whole tone in two words: cheerfully absurd, a little menacing and deeply in on the joke.

Spoilers for 2000 ADShow the scene

Tharg the Mighty is the fictional alien editor of 2000 AD, introduced on the cover of the very first issue (26 February 1977) and created by Pat Mills. Green-skinned, with a white mohawk, he is from the planet Quaxxann, which orbits Betelgeuse, and he calls his readers Earthlets. The fan wiki glosses "Borag Thungg" as "galactic greetings", citing the letters-and-news page Tharg's Nerve Centre in Prog 7 and the 1978 annual; its counterpart "Splundig vur thrigg" means farewell and is credited to the "Meet Tharg" feature in Prog 1. Tharg has opened his editorial pages with the phrase ever since.
