The Skull Knight

Struggler.

— Berserk ‧ 1989

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A struggler is someone who keeps flailing against fate when everyone else has accepted it, and Berserk adopts the word as Guts's identity. Fans use it as a motto for stubbornness against bad odds, and it has become the community's shorthand for the series' outlook of will against destiny.

Spoilers for BerserkShow the scene

"Struggler" is the name the Skull Knight gives Guts. In manga episode 37 of the Golden Age arc (1994), Guts is camped alone after leaving the Band of the Hawk when a skeleton-armoured horseman appears, addresses him as the Struggler and warns of the Eclipse, an event a year away. The Skull Knight calls him struggler again in volume 14 (episode 92), wishing him a good journey. Guts's own declaration of war on the demons comes in volume 13 (episode 91).
