Mary Jane Watson

Face it, Tiger... you just hit the jackpot!

— The Amazing Spider-Man ‧ 1963

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The comics mentioned her from 1964 and hid her face in a 1965 cameo, then spent a whole issue of build-up on a single entrance, and the line is her whole personality in a breath: confident, teasing and impossible to refuse. It also gave her a nickname for Peter, 'Tiger', that has followed the couple through comics, cartoons and films. Wikipedia counts the moment among the most iconic introductions in comics.

Spoilers for The Amazing Spider-ManShow the scene

The Amazing Spider-Man #42 (November 1966), with story by Stan Lee and art by John Romita, is the issue in which Mary Jane Watson finally appears with her face on show. Aunt May's friend has been trying to set Peter Parker up with her niece for years, and Peter has always dodged it; Mary Jane had previously shown only as a cameo in #25, her face hidden behind a plant. In #42 Gwen Stacy invites Peter to a party, but he declines because he has to meet his neighbour's niece. Mary Jane then makes her entrance with this line.
