Barbie’s narration, The Sandman #37 (1992)
Everybody has a secret world inside of them. I mean everybody.
— The Sandman · 1989
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Barbie's experience makes apparently ordinary strangers impossible to dismiss. The small opening of the passage holds the larger insight: a person's visible life gives little measure of what is happening inside. Her grief for Wanda gives that generosity a particular weight.

Barbie reflects on hidden inner lives in The Sandman #37, ‘I Woke Up and One of Us Was Crying’ (1992), the final chapter of A Game of You. The selected words excerpt her longer reflection. They belong to Barbie, rather than Dream, and are presented as her narration. The chapter places ordinary journeys and encounters beside the private worlds the story has explored.
