Master Li

That which is dreamed can never be lost, can never be undreamed.

— The Sandman · 1989

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The line treats a dream as an experience that leaves something behind even when its place cannot be found again. Master Li's uncertain route makes that persistence tangible. Losing access to something does not erase the fact that it entered a life.

Spoilers for The SandmanShow the scene

Master Li is the traveller at the centre of The Sandman #74, ‘Exiles’ (1996), collected in The Wake. His desert journey crosses the soft places where ordinary geography and time no longer hold. The surviving written quotation source credits this reflection to Master Li. The page keeps that credit without claiming that Dream speaks it.
