Hob Gadling

To absent friends, lost loves, old gods, and the season of mists; and may each and every one of us always give the devil his due.

— The Sandman · 1989

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Hob makes room in one glass for friendship, regret and the uncertain business ahead. The final courtesy to the devil acquires particular bite because Dream is actually preparing to face Hell. The warmth of the toast gives that journey a human point of departure.
