Death

You are utterly the stupidest, most self-centered, appallingest excuse for an anthropomorphic personification on this or any other plane!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Only a sibling could make cosmic status sound this ridiculous. Death's elaborate insult cuts through Dream's dignity because she sees the sulking person beneath the office. Her impatience also makes room for care: she gets him moving again.

Spoilers for The SandmanShow the scene

Death scolds Dream in The Sandman #8, ‘The Sound of Her Wings’ (1989). Having recovered his tools, he is still sunk in misery, and his sister has little patience for his self-absorption. Her rebuke precedes the day's encounters that show him what her work involves. The wording here follows the printed panel's ‘on this or any other plane’ rather than the ‘in’ found in some transcriptions.
