Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
A gag at the most solemn moment of a serious game: a Renaissance Italian uncle introduces himself the way a famous plumber does, and the series knows it. Fans love it as proof the developers were playing along, a favourite example of a one-line Easter egg that changes the tone of a scene.

Spoilers for Assassin’s Creed IIShow the scene
In Assassin's Creed II (2009), Ezio Auditore, newly an Assassin in 15th-century Italy, is outside Monteriggioni when a man greets him. Ezio asks if they have met; the man answers that he is his uncle Mario, using the line, and says it has been far too long. He has heard what happened in Florence and takes Ezio away from danger. Mario is lord of Monteriggioni, and the line is an Easter egg nodding to the Nintendo plumber Mario.
