Minsc, a huge bald ranger with a purple face tattoo, charges sword-first through a dusk forest with Boo the hamster on his shoulder, as a spear-wielding gnoll lunges from the undergrowth.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a berserker's war cry delivered as practical advice to a pet, and the whole character lives in that gap: terrifying, sincere and a little unwell. Boo's silent loyalty is what makes Minsc loveable rather than merely loud. Other games have since answered it, from Tali's go for the optics in Mass Effect to a Guild Wars shout and an Idle Champions ultimate called Go for the Eyes.

Spoilers for Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of AmnShow the scene

Minsc is a Rashemi ranger who can join your party in the Baldur's Gate games, and Boo is the hamster he carries everywhere and insists is a miniature giant space hamster. The line is one of his combat battle cries: sent into a fight, he can bellow it at his rodent companion and then break into a roar. Jim Cummings voices Minsc in the original games. The pair began at the tabletop, in Dungeons & Dragons sessions run by lead designer James Ohlen, where BioWare developer Cameron Tofer played an unstable ranger with a pet hamster.
