Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

On its face it is a standard radio call: a soldier telling his team he is switching to night vision. It became a joke because of the still of Price in the dark, used by players to announce that they are leaving a chat, closing a tab or going offline. The solemn tone, the callsign and the plain statement of intent are what make it so easy to put on anything.

The words most people know are from the 2019 reboot of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare rather than the 2007 original. In the reboot's reveal trailer (30 May 2019) Captain Price leads a squad through a night forest, reports that he is putting on his night-vision goggles, and signs off with his callsign. Bravo Six goes back to the 2007 game, where it was the callsign of Price's SAS unit alongside Soap and Gaz. The reboot's Moldova mission is titled Going Dark and sends Price and Garrick into Barkov's estate under cover of darkness.
