Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The two-word cry is Cuphead in miniature: the cheerful ring-announcer patter of an old cartoon, thrown at a game that will beat you senseless. It tells you the next few minutes are a fight to the death and sets up the cheeky 'Knockout!' that ends it. Players still say it to start any boss attempt, a duel or a pub brawl.

Spoilers for CupheadShow the scene

Every boss fight in Studio MDHR's Cuphead (2017) opens the same way. A boxing-bell style title card flashes 'Ready?' while the unseen Announcer, voiced by Luke De Ayora, calls a ring-style line such as 'Good day for a swell battle!'. Then 'WALLOP!' bursts onto the screen as a second voice line, such as 'And begin!' or 'Here goes!', and the fight starts. The Announcer plays a role like a boxing ring umpire and closes each fight with 'Knockout!'. The game's whole look comes from 1930s rubber-hose cartoons.
