Solaire of Astora

Jolly cooperation!

— Dark Souls • 2011

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Solaire is the game's friendliest soul in a world of grim ones, and 'jolly cooperation' is how he says so: co-op play as a happy adventure rather than a grind. It became the series' unofficial greeting for summon signs and the name of the whole 'praise the sun' attitude to being helped. Fans still type it to anyone who shares a boss fight.

Spoilers for Dark SoulsShow the scene

In Dark Souls (2011), Solaire is found gazing at the sun just before the bridge to the Undead Parish, a knight who asks whether the player will help him on a lonely journey. If you agree, he hands over the White Sign Soapstone and explains that the player can now summon other travellers as spirits across worlds to engage in "jolly co-operation". In the game's text the phrase is hyphenated, and he tells you to spot his summon sign by its brilliant aura. He can later be summoned against bosses such as the Bell Gargoyles, Ornstein and Smough.
