The Ancestor

Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The game never lets you enjoy a win for long, and this is the voice reminding you that complacency kills heroes faster than monsters do. It works as a joke because the Ancestor says it just as your party limps home bruised and stressed, only for the next expedition to go wrong. Fans quote it in other games and in real life whenever a lucky streak is about to end.

Spoilers for Darkest DungeonShow the scene

In Darkest Dungeon (Red Hook Studios, 2016) the Ancestor narrates everything the heir's party does. He is a dead lord whose letter began the story and is voiced by Wayne June. The line is one of his stock responses after a battle is won. It comes alongside others that cheer on a lucky run, such as 'a trifling victory, but a victory nonetheless'. The wiki also records that it, and the Ancestor's cry 'How quickly the tide turns', have become internet memes.
