Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
A sentence that works as tutorial, warning and horror all at once: someone died learning this, and left the lesson behind. It is the franchise's rule in four words, replacing the shooter reflex of aiming for the head, and fans still pass it on as the first advice for newcomers.

Isaac Clarke does not say this; it is scrawled in blood on a wall in Chapter 1, New Arrivals, of Dead Space (2008). Soon after Isaac reaches the USG Ishimura, he takes an elevator to a repair bench with a Plasma Cutter, and next to a corpse the message "Cut off their limbs" is written. It teaches the player how to fight the Necromorphs, which can only be killed by severing their limbs. Strategic dismemberment was one of the game's founding gameplay principles, set against the headshot habits of other shooters.
