Adam Jensen, goateed and with black prosthetic arms, lies on a surgical bed in a gold-lit Detroit lab as a doctor works at a monitor, the city skyline glowing through the blinds.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the franchise's thesis in five words: a man made into a weapon and a symbol without being asked, in a world arguing over whether augmentation is liberation or ownership. It stuck so well that the sequel, Mankind Divided, named its hardest difficulty after it, a mode of one life and a single manual save. Players use it as the protest of anyone handed a job they never wanted.

Spoilers for Deus Ex: Human RevolutionShow the scene

Adam Jensen is head of security at Sarif Industries in Detroit. When a team of augmented mercenaries called the Tyrants raids the company, he is grievously wounded, and David Sarif has him rebuilt with some of the most extensive cybernetics ever fitted, most of them locked until he earns Praxis points. Six months of recovery follow. Jensen says this line once in Human Revolution, alongside the thought that they say they saved him but he is not sure saved is the right word.
