Deckard Cain

Stay awhile, and listen!

— Diablo II  ·  2000

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Cain is a storyteller in a game about killing, and his greeting asks the player to put the sword down for a moment. It works because the lore arrives in an old man's voice, kind and tired. Heroes of the Storm gave Cain an ability called Stay Awhile and Listen that puts enemies to sleep, and Overwatch's Blizzard World plays his voice, so the line has spread across Blizzard.

Spoilers for Diablo IIShow the scene

Deckard Cain, last of the Horadrim, greets the player in the original Diablo with "Hello, my friend. Stay awhile and listen" in the town of Tristram. In Diablo II (2000) the search for him is a quest in Act I: the player finds Cain imprisoned in Tristram and frees him, after which he settles in the Rogue Encampment, identifies items for free, and follows the player through every act. "Stay awhile and listen" is one of the greetings he can give when clicked. Michael Gough voices him in every game.
