The Butcher

Ahh... fresh meat!

— Diablo ‧ 1996

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A cheerful, hungry greeting is more frightening than a roar: it tells you the monster has already decided what you are. For many players it was the first real jolt of the game, a dead end with a cleaver in it, and the line became the Butcher's signature. Blizzard has kept bringing him back, down to a Diablo Immortal cosmetic set named after the line.

Spoilers for DiabloShow the scene

In Diablo (Blizzard North, released on Windows at the turn of 1997), the Butcher waits on the second level of the Cathedral beneath Tristram, in a small room strewn with corpses. A dying townsman by the Cathedral entrance has told the hero how Archbishop Lazarus led a search party into a trap and left it to the monsters, and the Butcher is the horror that cut it down. When the hero walks into his chamber the Butcher lets out his greeting, and then charges, cleaver first. He is a unique overlord with only 110 life, which is exactly why he is lethal to a low-level character who arrives under-geared.
