Expressionist painting: a dishevelled detective sits on a bed in a rainy, run-down hotel room, a red-lit web of notes on the wall.

The Mazovian Socio-Economics thought, Disco Elysium (2019)

0.000% of Communism has been built. Evil child-murdering billionaires still rule the world with a shit-eating grin.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is Disco Elysium's joke about its own politics: a fantasy of building a utopia, followed by the arithmetic of how far away it is, and a hint of a university degree in truth to console you. The line is funny, angry and sad in a single breath, so people share it as a screenshot whenever the news gets worse. It also sums up the game's tone, where ideology is a mood your detective can try on.

Disco Elysium (2019). This is the finished text of the Thought Cabinet thought "Mazovian Socio-Economics", not a spoken line. The game unlocks it when the player picks three left-wing, communist dialogue options, which makes a Rhetoric orb appear. Internalising it takes three hours and ten minutes of in-game research. While it is cooking, the thought is described as a Big Communism Builder trying to raise the Commune of '02 from the sea. Once it is complete, it turns into a bitter report on how little has been built and into a precise model of the world.
