Death is a preferable alternative to communism!
— Fallout 3 ‧ 2008
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
It pushes the Cold War slogan to its logical end: a machine so sure of itself that it ranks dying above living under the other side. Played as a joke by Bethesda, it is quoted by fans as a punchline on both sides of the politics, as an over-the-top rallying cry, and as shorthand for Fallout's retro-futurist propaganda.

Another of Liberty Prime's stock combat lines in Fallout 3 (Bethesda, 2008). The Brotherhood of Steel's giant robot calls it out as it advances during the Take it Back! quest, when it marches on the Jefferson Memorial and trounces the Enclave. Liberty Prime was built by the pre-War US Army to be the spearhead against China, and its dialogue is made of anti-communist slogans in a dry computer voice. It returns in the Broken Steel add-on, which gives it a farewell line, "I die, so that democracy may... live...", and again in Fallout 4.
