Did I ever tell you what the definition of insanity is?
— Far Cry 3 · 2012
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The question is Vaas's calling card: a madman offering a neat, plausible definition of madness with a gun in his other hand. The writers meant it as a comment on games themselves, the same loop of shoot, loot and repeat, which gives the speech a second life as a joke aimed at players of any repetitive game. Fans quote it every time they retry a boss, a spawn or a bad plan.

Spoilers for Far Cry 3Show the scene
In Far Cry 3 (2012), pirate boss Vaas Montenegro has already captured Jason Brody and his friends on the Rook Islands when he ambushes Jason again at a truck he believed held captured Rakyat warriors. He ties Jason to a cinder block and opens his "insanity monologue" with this question. He claims the first person to define insanity as repeating the same act and expecting a different result was right, then he turns the idea on Jason before kicking him into a cenote to drown. Jason escapes. The speech was voiced by Michael Mando, who improvised his audition and reshaped the character.
