Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Two words that sell a whole attitude: the cool, self-contained ex-SOLDIER who will not be drawn into anyone's cause. The irony is the point, since he ends up carrying the world's fate on his back, and fans still use it as a deadpan brush-off, usually with the reminder that he turned out to be very interested after all. It is the line that sets up his arc.

Spoilers for Final Fantasy VIIShow the scene
"Not interested" is Cloud Strife's tagline in Final Fantasy VII (Square, PlayStation, 1997). Cloud is introduced as a 21-year-old mercenary hired by the eco-terrorist group Avalanche to attack Shinra's Mako reactors, and he insists he works only for the pay. Wikipedia's account of the game's development says the event planners deliberately repeated the phrase to emphasise his personality, alongside a swaggering standing animation by Motomu Toriyama. The detached pose is a false persona: as the story unfolds, Cloud's real past and his memories come apart.
