A shadowy figure in a hat looms in the doorway of a derelict pizzeria workshop beside a slumped animatronic.

I always come back.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the villain's creed in four words: he has died, been burned and trapped, and he still returns. For fans it is both a menacing sign-off and a grim joke about the franchise itself, which keeps coming back with new games, books and films. The line is also a reminder that the earlier trailer taglines were pointing at Afton long before his name was confirmed.

William Afton, the Purple Guy, is the serial killer behind the Five Nights at Freddy's story, and the boast is his. The spoken line is not in Five Nights at Freddy's 3: the fan wiki lists it among Afton's audio lines in Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator (December 2017), the game that closed the main series. What FNaF 3 (2 March 2015) did give fans was the seed of the phrase: its teaser text said that he will come back and that he always does, and the wiki records that as the origin of the catchphrase. Afton's refusal to stay dead is the point of the line.
