Paimon is not emergency food!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Paimon's indignation is the point: a pint-sized guide who insists she is the Best Guide in Teyvat, and who is constantly reminded that she looks like a snack. Talking about herself in the third person makes the protest even more tragic and funny. The joke escaped the game as a community meme, with fans offering her up as emergency rations in art, edits and memes while still treating her as the face of the game.

Paimon is the floating, fairy-like companion who guides the Traveler through Teyvat from the start of Genshin Impact (miHoYo, 2020), and the game turns her into the butt of a running gag: she keeps getting called "emergency food". The joke starts in the prologue quest "Wind-Riding Knight", where Amber asks what the little floating thing is and the player can answer "Emergency food", prompting an indignant protest from Paimon. Other characters keep it going (Fischl calls her a "Strange Fae-shaped Emergency Sustenance"), and she answers the insult with this outraged line.
