In a dim lab of screens and cables, Alyx Vance stands in a trance as her father Eli, grey-bearded with a prosthetic leg, recoils, a suited figure faintly reflected in the dark glass behind.

G-Man

Prepare for unforeseen consequences.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A threat, a warning and a cliffhanger in five words, from a character who never says anything plainly. It reads as the G-Man's rule of the universe: every favour has a price. Because Episode Two ends on Eli's death and no sequel followed, the line became the marker for Half-Life's unfinished business, and fans still say it with a hollow laugh.

Spoilers for Half-Life 2: Episode TwoShow the scene

At the end of Half-Life 2: Episode Two, the wounded Alyx Vance is being healed by Vortigaunts. Because they are busy, the G-Man is able to reach Gordon Freeman in one of his dream-like sequences. He tells Gordon to escort Alyx to White Forest, then whispers into her ear a message for her father: prepare for unforeseen consequences. When Alyx passes it on to Eli, he is visibly shaken, sends her off to make tea, and a short while later an Advisor kills him.
