Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
It is the Pale King's justification for the cruelty at the heart of Hallownest: the kingdom's safety is worth any sacrifice, even a child bred to be empty. Because it is whispered rather than shown, it carries the tragedy of the game. Fans read it as the thesis of the story and quote it as the terse motto of a ruler who sacrifices others for a greater good.

The words belong to the Pale King, the vanished ruler of Hallownest in Team Cherry's Hollow Knight (2017). He never appears as a living NPC. Players hear them through the Dream Nail, which reads the dying echo of a thought. In the White Palace the Dream Nail yields a murmured 'No cost too great'. In a memory of the Abyss, the phrase begins the Pale King's sequence of orders to the Vessel: no mind to think, no will to break, no voice to cry suffering. It ends 'You are the Hollow Knight'.
