C-C-C-Combo Breaker!

— Killer Instinct ‧ 1994

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The stutter turns a game mechanic into a taunt. Whoever pulls it off cuts the other player's combo off mid-flow, so the phrase became a way to interrupt anything: a winning streak, a bad story, an argument. It still gets shouted by players who have never touched the game.

Spoilers for Killer InstinctShow the scene

Killer Instinct (Rare, arcade 1994, published by Midway, with a Super NES port in 1995) is a fighting game built around long, automated combos. A combo breaker is the defensive move a trapped player can use to interrupt a combo at the right stage, after which the leading edge of the breaker's health bar flashes. The announcer shouts the break with a stutter on the first syllable. The Killer Instinct Wiki writes the call as a run of C's before 'combo breaker', and notes that the game Dust: An Elysian Tail has a side quest named after it.
