The lemmings

Oh no!

— Lemmings • 1991

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the most famous last word in puzzle gaming: a tiny voice announcing that a lemming's fate is sealed and you did it. The cry is both the joke and the mechanic, since the player triggers it on purpose and then watches the countdown with dread anyway. It became shorthand for any self-inflicted doom, and the expansion's title turned it into a sequel pun.

Spoilers for LemmingsShow the scene

In Lemmings (DMA Design, published by Psygnosis for the Amiga in 1991), the player guides hordes of mindless lemmings to an exit. One of the eight skills turns a lemming into a Bomber. A countdown appears over its head, the lemming carries on for five seconds, then it stops, yells "Oh no!", shakes, and explodes, leaving a hole in the ground. Bombers clear obstacles and blockers, and the "nuke" option turns every remaining lemming into one, ending a hopeless level. The game's expansion pack was titled Oh No! More Lemmings.
