In a starship's weapons bay, an armoured alien sniper with a fringed crest sits at a workbench of glowing holo-panels tuning a long rifle while a human officer waits behind him, a fleet and a planet beyond the window.

Can it wait for a bit? I'm in the middle of some calibrations.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A throwaway excuse that became the character. Garrus is the soldier who would rather fine-tune a gun than make small talk, and the line says so with dry, apologetic politeness. Fans turned 'calibrations' into shorthand for him, and the later games lean into it: his crewmates tease him, and he jokes that other turians complain he overuses the word. It is also a fond reminder of the quiet visits to his battery.

Spoilers for Mass Effect 2Show the scene

In Mass Effect 2, Commander Shepard has been rebuilt by Cerberus and is gathering a team for a suicide mission. Garrus Vakarian, Shepard's old turian ally, is recruited on Omega, where he has been running a vigilante crew as 'Archangel'. Once aboard the Normandy SR-2, he takes over the main battery room forward of the cryo pods. That is where Shepard finds him between missions, and where he brushes off an interruption with this line. The wiki notes the calibrations became a running gag.
