A huge shirtless senator, his skin hardening into black plating with red sparks, towers over a white-haired cyborg swordsman in a burning, ruined city under a blood-red sky.

Senator Armstrong

Nanomachines, son!

— Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance · 2013

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The best non-explanation in games: a man with a superhuman body, a stump speech and no need to justify either. Fans took Nanomachines, son! as the all-purpose answer to any impossible bit of sci-fi, and it has been quoted and remixed endlessly. It works because Armstrong says it with total conviction, like a politician who has never been asked a follow-up.

Spoilers for Metal Gear Rising: RevengeanceShow the scene

Near the end of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Senator Steven Armstrong of Colorado, a presidential hopeful who has secretly boosted himself with custom nanomachines, fights Raiden after Metal Gear EXCELSUS has been destroyed. He rants about remaking America as a land where every person fights their own war. When Raiden's blows seem to do nothing, Armstrong explains, in his gravelly voice, that the nanomachines harden in response to physical trauma, and that Raiden cannot hurt him. Alastair Duncan voices him in English.
