YoRHa androids

Glory to mankind.

— NieR: Automata · 2017

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The phrase is the faith the whole cast runs on, said so automatically that it reads as devotion until the story shows what it is built on. Fans use it as a sign-off and a rallying cry, and its sheer stateliness is why Blizzard took it for the Commander White skin for Mercy in the Overwatch crossover.

Spoilers for NieR: AutomataShow the scene

"Glory to Mankind" is the YoRHa android force's slogan in NieR: Automata (directed by Yoko Taro, released in Japan on 23 February 2017). The androids use it as a greeting, a salute and a sign-off at the end of high-profile messages, including those from the Council of Humanity itself, and it appears on their weapons, messages and idle screens as a constant reminder of their purpose. They pair it with a left-handed salute, hand flat over the chest. Only much later does the game show how little remains of the mankind they are serving. The line has no single speaker, and speaker and work in lines.txt are right.
