Arsène

I am thou, thou art I.

— Persona 5 ‧ 2016

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Persona fans hear it as the series' thesis: the Persona is not a monster you command but your own rebellious self, answering the moment you stop obeying. The archaic grammar gives the line the weight of a pact, and it plays under every first summon in the series. Fans use it as shorthand for self-acceptance and for the stylish power-up moment,.

The phrase is the Persona series' awakening formula. In Persona 5 (Atlus, 2016) it is first heard in Kamoshida's Palace, where the protagonist, later codenamed Joker, and Ryuji are captured by the corrupt Shadow of their gym teacher and face execution. The protagonist awakens to his Persona, Arsène, who speaks the line from within him before the first power-up and escape. The Megami Tensei Wiki lists it as the signature words of a protagonist's Persona on first summoning, with the full English version running from "I am thou" into the sea of the soul. The wording varies from game to game, and in Persona 5 the Shadows repeat it after a successful negotiation.
