Professor Oak

Hello there! Welcome to the world of Pokémon!

— Pokémon Red and Blue ‧ 1996

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the front door of a franchise: a gentle, grandfatherly greeting that says you are about to start something big, and that a world exists to be explored. Later generations reword the welcome (Gold and Silver and FireRed and LeafGreen open differently), but this is the wording fans remember, because it was the first thing every Kanto trainer read.

Spoilers for Pokémon Red and BlueShow the scene

The very first thing anyone sees on starting Pokémon Red or Blue is Professor Oak, who steps onto the screen and greets the player with this line. He introduces himself as Oak, the 'Pokémon Prof', and explains that the world is full of creatures called Pokémon: some people keep them as pets, others battle with them, and he studies them as a profession. He then asks the player's name, introduces his grandson as the player's lifelong rival and asks for his name too, and sends the player off to start a Pokémon legend. The games were released in Japan as Red and Green on 27 February 1996 and in North America as Red and Blue on 28 September 1998.
