Inside a dim, empty bar, the front window's covering of yellowed paper has a jagged hole torn in it, grey fog pressing against the glass beyond, a single stool by the counter.

There was a HOLE here. It's gone now.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Seven words on a window, in a game full of eerie notes, and they say that something that was here is no longer. The wording is flat and a little darkly funny, which is why fans quote it. It shows Silent Hill 2's habit of leaving a line with no speaker and no explanation, so that the player has to supply the meaning.

Spoilers for Silent Hill 2Show the scene

In Silent Hill 2 (Konami, 2001), the line is not spoken by anyone: it is a message written across a newspaper-covered window inside Neely's Bar, a one-floor building on the corner of Neely and Sanders Streets in the South Vale district of Silent Hill. A note in a motor home on Saul Street points the player to the bar, where a map holds a clue to the apartment gate key, and the window message is easy to miss. The game's companion Book of Lost Memories explains it as referring to the holes that open up around the town, luring people with darkness in their hearts. The 2024 remake keeps the bar.
