At dusk in a dense jungle on a fortified island, a dark spiky hedgehog stands silhouetted on a fallen tree while a blue hedgehog streaks through the clearing below in a trail of light.

Shadow the Hedgehog

Faker? I think you're the fake hedgehog around here.

— Sonic Adventure 2 · 2001

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the moment Shadow shows who he thinks he is: a cold, superior rival who flips the accusation back on the hero. The sneer in the last clause ("not even good enough to be my fake") is what fans remember. It has become the standard reply for anyone called a fake, and it is one of the best-known lines in all of Sonic.

Spoilers for Sonic Adventure 2Show the scene

In Sonic Adventure 2 (Dreamcast, 2001), Sonic has been arrested by G.U.N. for crimes committed by a black hedgehog who looks like him. When he finally catches up with that hedgehog in a forest, he shouts that he has found the faker. Shadow answers with the line: it is Sonic who is the fake hedgehog, and he is not even good enough to be Shadow's fake. The scene appears in both the Hero and Dark stories and leads into their first fight.
