Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
'Fresh' is the game's whole attitude in one word: stay on trend, stay inky, stay young. The Squid Sisters turn it into a send-off so cheery that players use it as a greeting and a gaming sign-off, and Nintendo carried the word into every sequel's slang. It is the sound of Inkopolis, a city where fashion and the next match are the only things that matter.

'Stay fresh!' is the sign-off of Callie and Marie, the cousins who make up the idol duo the Squid Sisters and who host the Inkopolis News broadcasts in Splatoon (Wii U, 28 May 2015). The wiki gives it as the Squid Sisters' catchphrase and as the program's motto in the first game, which the pair stretch out as 'Staaaay fresh!'. 'Fresh' itself is Inkling slang for good, fashionable or trendy, and the game also uses it as a rating of how up-to-date your gear and weapons are. In Splatoon 2 the news motto changes after the Squid Sisters hand the show to Pearl and Marina.
