Opening narration

The last Metroid is in captivity. The galaxy is at peace.

— Super Metroid  ·  1994

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The line announces that the story is over, and the very next scene proves it is not. That irony made it one of the best-known openings in Nintendo's catalogue, and fans quote it, usually with a grin, about any peace that is about to be broken.

Spoilers for Super MetroidShow the scene

Super Metroid (SNES, 1994) begins on its title screen with a calm voice recapping the first two games: Samus fought the Metroids on Zebes, then on their homeworld SR388, and delivered the last larva to the scientists at the Ceres research station. This line is the first sentence of that recap, so it is the opening narration, not ending text. The story then turns on the larva being stolen by the Space Pirate leader Ridley and Samus following him to Zebes. The Metroid wiki credits the voice to Nintendo of America localizer Dan Owsen.
