Sheogorath

Cheese for everyone!

— The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion · 2006

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A triumphant reward announcement dissolves into a whim before anyone can enjoy it. The cheese is funny because it sounds so small and homely coming from a god with enormous power. The reversal makes clear that his enthusiasm offers no reliable guide to what will happen next.

Spoilers for The Elder Scrolls IV: OblivionShow the scene

Sheogorath announces this celebration in Shivering Isles (2007), the Oblivion expansion, when the player reports that Xedilian is functioning again. He immediately changes his mind and suggests cheese for no one instead. The actual reward is the ability to summon his chamberlain Haskill, another person drawn into the Mad God's amusement.
