Endure and survive.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It sounds like a tagline for the whole franchise: a line a child might love in a comic book and a grown survivor might live by. The series gives it to Ellie as a joke she savours, then makes it the title of the episode where the cost of surviving gets spelled out. Fans quote it as the story's creed.

Spoilers for The Last of UsShow the scene

'Endure and survive' is the motto of Savage Starlight, the space-opera comic series Ellie loves in The Last of Us, whose issues turn up in the ruins as the player travels with her and Joel across a collapsed America. For a fourteen-year-old who has never known the world before the outbreak, the comic's slogan is half joke and half creed. HBO's 2023 adaptation made the phrase the title of its fifth episode, in which Ellie, hiding with Joel, Henry and Sam in the tunnels under Kansas City, reads it aloud from a comic and savours each word.
